It is the mission of the Walworth Parks and Recreation Department to provide diverse year-round leisure activities and facilities to our community that promote citizen involvement and a strong sense of community while striving to increase the social, cultural, and physical well-being of our residents. It is our goal to constantly improve our existing programs and parks for the enjoyment of our citizens.

Our park gates towards the back of Sherburne Road Park’s entrance will be closed  for the remainder winter season. Please keep in mind the park remains OPEN throughout the winter for anyone who wishes to use the walking/snowshoeing trails and/or green space. Just before the gates we have a small parking lot for vehicles. Directly across from that parking lot is the auxiliary entrance to the Red Trail. Visitors may also choose to walk around the gates and along the roadway to the rear of the park as well if they choose. Park gates will open back up in the spring once the snow clears!

Spring 2019We make no promises of just when Spring will be here.  Anyone who’s lived upstate long enough knows better than to do that!  What we can say with certainty is we’re excited about the many different Spring opportunities we have for the community this upcoming season.

After the success of our Fall programs with Snapology of Pittsford we’re eager to announce another series of classes for the Spring.  See what LEGO fun Snapology has to offer this Spring on page 26!

Our adult programs have really taken off!  It’s great to see groups of friends and/or family members getting together to enjoy an evening of hands-on fun learning a new skill or craft.  Don’t miss our selection of all new trendy classes on page 39!

Ice skating weather has arrived! We can’t thank the community enough for how they’ve embraced the rink.  For those that may not have seen our Facebook post if you have a little one who’s learning to skate and would benefit from a skating aid (basically a “walker” for the ice) we now have some to rent! Call or stop by the Recreation Offices to pick yours up.  We’ve also had many inquiries about skate rentals. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons running rentals through the department really isn’t an option at this point.  You can, however, rent skates for $10 a day at RV&E Bike Shop just down the road in Fairport. Get out on the rink and try skating this winter!

Be on the lookout for Spring swim dates as we anticipate swim lessons returning to the Gananda Pool this Spring! The pool is slated to re-open March 1st.  If all goes according to plan we hope to announce our Spring lesson schedules in the near future! Find more info on pages 18 & 19.

THANK YOU RON FORMAN
For 10 Incredible Years of Service
Retiring on January 25th, 2019

Ron WebRon began his career with the Town on January 2nd, 2009 as a Building/Facilities/Parks Department employee with many duties ranging from general maintenance of the Town Hall and Ginegaw Park Lodge to mowing and maintaining park spaces, plowing, clearing sidewalks, parks equipment upkeep, seasonal preparation (assisting with Town Christmas lights and putting up and taking down the Ginegaw Park Ice Rink), and so much more. Over the years we have greatly benefited from Ron’s wide array of knowledge of machinery and tractors, plumbing, and general contracting. Ron is a “fix-it” guy through and through and we will certainly miss his ingenuity and insight in finding unconventional ways to solve the many different obstacles we face during the course of general workweek.

Ron’s many talents extend far beyond his hired duties. Ron is truly a master carpenter/woodworker. One of Ron’s first tasks when hired was to assist with carpentry in the building of the Ginegaw Park Lodge. Ron’s fingerprints are literally all over the walls of the Lodge and his skills and expertise during the project were indispensable. Ron had the fortune (or misfortune!) or being hired right when we began to expand the depth and breath of our program offerings and festivals. Time and time again Ron we tasked with “special projects”; Wooden caricature cutouts for the Harvest Moon Festival and Santa’s sleigh for Light the Night, a Friends of the Walworth Parks replica Lodge donation box, framing to heat the outdoor pavilion for Santa Claus and his many visitors, and planter boxes of all shapes and sizes for gardening programs to name a few. Ron often joked that we needed to spend more time sleeping at night and less time coming up with some of the “ideas” we had for him. We can’t understate just how much we’ll miss Ron’s talents with woodworking and his ability to size up a project and find a way to make our ideas become a reality. We hope he’s ready to remain on a department retainer!

As much as we will miss Ron’s technical abilities we’ll miss who he is as a person so much more so. Ron is the epitome of a “gentle giant”, a kind and caring soul who is always quick to check on your needs and willing to do whatever is asked of him. It will certainly take some time to get used to looking out over the park and not seeing Ron on the Jacobsen mower during the warmer months. Our festivals won’t be the same without him on the tractor pulling hay and wagon rides and the Ginegaw Farm Market loses some of its luster being down one of its loyal vendor stewards for the last five years.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to Ron for his hard work, dedication, and countless contributions the last 10 years. We wish him nothing but endless happiness as he begins this new chapter in his life!
