It is the mission of the Walworth Parks and Recreation Department to provide diverse year-round leisure activities and facilities to our community that promote citizen involvement and a strong sense of community while striving to increase the social, cultural, and physical well-being of our residents. It is our goal to constantly improve our existing programs and parks for the enjoyment of our citizens.

Another summer is almost in the books! Going into the “peak” summer season we knew this year would be one of our most challenging to date as we added anumber of new, popular programs into the mix running alongside our Adventure Day Camps and Summer Soccer Leagues. While at times it seemed we were in a vortex where we weren’t quite sure of up from down and left from right – thanks to the dedicated efforts of our many wonderful summer coaches, assistant coaches, and parent “fill-ins”, we not only made it through but enjoyed successful and rewarding seasons in soccer, softball, and baseball. The addition of our softball and baseball leagues this summer was particularly exciting as we were able to both fulfill a need for our softball girls and bring a buzz back to baseball in the area. Seeing the park full of so many young athletes most nights this summer was something special!

One thing we certainly learned during the summer is that Walworth is going Gaga – for Gaga Ball that is! Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. Dubbed a kinder, gentler version of dodge ball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball. Our camp kids couldn’t get enough Gaga and we’re currently looking at where and how to best implement a Gaga “Pit” in the park. We’re sure it will be a “hit”!

As the new year approaches we’d again like to remind everyone of our new facility reservation procedure when we open the books for 2020 on Wednesday, October 2nd. Moving forward “opening day” for reservations will be held through a lottery system. Any individuals wishing to enter the lottery for 2020 facility reservations may come to the Recreation Offices on the lower level of the Walworth Town Hall anytime on Wednesday, October 2nd between 5:30pm and 6:30pm to receive their lottery number. Beginning at 6:35pm our lottery will commence. Reservations will be awarded as per the order of numbers drawn. Please keep in mind many prime dates (especially summer dates) will be popular. It’s always a great idea to come with a number of possible dates that would work for your function! Any individuals arriving after 6:30pm may still make a reservation on opening day – however you’re priority will be bumped behind all of our lottery entrants. Once all lottery numbers have been drawn we’ll then take any additional reservations in the order those individuals after 6:30pm came through our doors. If you have any
questions about our new opening day procedure, facility rentals, or the facilities themselves, please don’t hesitate to contact us at your convenience!

The return of swim lessons to the newly renovated Gananda Pool brought a smile to many of our loyal swimmers faces this summer. Don’t miss out on the Fall swim schedule! Find information on lessons and open swims on pages 32 and 33 of the Town Topics.

The Friends of the Walworth Parks Group needs your help for their annual Pumpkin Walk & Halloween Party in the Park on Friday, October 11th! Believe it or not this is the tenth year Ginegaw Park will host the event! The Friends of the Parks are looking for businesses, organizations, or other groups that would be interested in sponsoring a “trick-or-treat” station on the Pumpkin Trail. Sponsors are asked to provide a specific number of treats for our trick-or-treaters during the evening. If you would be interested in sponsoring a station please let us know so we can refer you to a Friends of the Walworth Parks Group representative.

Along those same lines be sure to mark your calendars for our annual Fall/Winter family festivals. The 10th Annual Harvest Moon Festival (can you believe it’s been that long already!) will take place Saturday, October 12th from 1pm-4pm. This year the festival is celebrating both ten years of festival fun and ten years of the Lodge in Ginegaw Park! Are you a chili cooker? To celebrate ten years we’re hoping to make this years Chili Cook-Off the best yet!  See entry information on page 41 of the Town Topics.

Light the Night in Ginegaw Park, our annual winter holiday family festival and community tree decorating contest will be held on Saturday, December 7th. It’s never too early to be thinking of tree decorating ideas! If you have a business, group, or organization that would like to participate and decorate a tree in our contest this year please let us know!

The Rink in Ginegaw Park will return again once the weather shifts to winter. We know we shouldn’t dare be thinking about winter just yet – but we hope for many
people the rink is a nice little silver lining to the cold and snow we’re so used to during the winter months in these parts!

Thank you to our wonderful Walworth (and beyond) community who are always so supportive of what we do! We do what we do because of all of you! We hope you all enjoy what the Fall season has to offer!
