Town Supervisor

I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and enjoyed the opportunity to attend some of the great events here in town. Special thanks to the Lions Club for organizing and running our annual Festival in the Park. You still have time to visit the Walworth Farmers Market, a great seasonal affair with fresh produce, locally produced items, and more. We have some super family focused activities for fall, which are covered in the pages of this issue.

It has been a busy summer for me as well. We have many projects underway to address issues from protecting our farmland to addressing the new requirements imposed by increasingly complicated laws affecting our sewer plant. Here are some updates on our activities:

Highway Superintendent Vendel and I toured the Town to review completed drainage projects and roadwork. We also looked at infrastructure that will need work soon and will be planning to make sure these needs are met. It was clear that our highway department has worked hard this summer and I hope you will join me in thanking our crew for their efforts! Just a reminder that if you have a basketball hoop next to the road it needs to be moved when not in use. We have had several hit by vehicles and causing damage.

It is budget time! This year we have 4 residents that will be working in partnership with members of our town council to make sure the needs of our community are understood and addressed. We have modernized the process to use a zero based budgeting system, rather than past practice in which a percentage was added to the prior year’s numbers. Department heads will build their budget from the ground up and be able to explain their department’s needs and allocations in detail. Also, we are instituting a capital plan to better manage the purchase and replacement of large equipment items. It is your money and everyone in our Town government is now keenly aware of that.

Our library is growing! After years of planning and grant requests, the Library is about to start construction of a much needed addition of almost 2000 sq ft. We are all excited to see the building stage of the project commence.

Much study and discussion is taking place around the future of our waste water treatment plant. Regulatory agencies are adding additional and improvement requirements for the treatment of waste water. The costs going into the future will run in the millions. One option we are reviewing is to partner with a new regional plant to be built by other municipalities and run by Wayne County Water and Sewer Authority. This approach allows for us to apply for large grants to go towards building the plant and then as regulation costs increase going into the future, these burdens are then shared by all the towns involved. It also opens opportunity for more homes and business to have sewer service. We are still developing the numbers and will share them once determined. If we keep our current plant, it will need a large investment to meet the increasing demands of regulators now and in the future.

Save the Dates! On September 14 there will be a free E waste day at Xerox Park and on September 21st we will be holding a free shredding day in partnership with LNB here at the Town Hall. Please check our Facebook page for more details.

I am honored to be your Town Supervisor and work hard every day for the residents of our Town. Please feel free to contact me directly with any concerns that you may have. My phone number is 315.986.1400 x1 or by cell at 585.230.2649.
